Sore Throat Evaluation and Treatment:

Sore throat (often called pharyngitis) and concerns for Strep throat are a very common reason to visit a doctor, including an Online Urgent Care in Oklahoma. In this post, we will discuss how to evaluate and treat a sore throat and potential Strep throat and what Doctor Online Oklahoma can do to help.

Patients with a sore throat complaint may also report pain in the throat, discomfort, scratchiness, pain with swallowing, lymph node swelling, fever, or a number of other potential accompanying complaints.  Signs on exam by a physician might reveal posterior throat changes, drainage in the throat, tonsillar pus pockets or exudate or a number of other findings. We often key in on whether a patient has had fever, lymph node swelling, or a cough.

Diagnosis of a sore throat may be further differentiated by a physician as general pharyngitis or potentially more specifically viral or bacterial pharyngitis.  Differential diagnosis may include, but not limited to tonsillitis, allergies, sinusitis, or other ENT conditions.  A rapid strep test or a throat culture might further help differentiate the diagnosis.

Sore throat and strep throat evaluation and treatment will depend on the clinical presentation and the diagnosis ascribed by the physician.  If deemed Bacterial pharyngitis (Strep throat), then likely will receive antibiotics.  Otherwise, a number of different over the counter remedies may be recommended.  As with all potential illnesses rest, hydration, and good hygiene practices are recommended.

What can Doctor Online Oklahoma do to help?  We can take a detailed medical history and a visual exam during the online doctor visit and provide a diagnosis.  We can formulate a treatment plan, which likely includes the recommendations above or may vary.

This post is meant to be an informative resource but may not be all inclusive.  Please see our medical services page for more conditions we treat.  Let us know if additional questions about sore throat (pharyngitis) or other conditions.  You can also schedule online doctor visits with our physician for further medical care.  You may also read more about sore throat or strep throat if you are interested in learning more.

How to Treat a Sinus Infection?

Acute Sinus infection or Acute Sinusitis is a very common reason to visit a doctor, including an Urgent Care or Online Urgent Care in Oklahoma.  In this post, we will cover how to treat a sinus infection and what Doctor Online Oklahoma can do to help.

Sinus infection symptoms typically include sinus pressure, congestion, drainage, and/or nasal production.  Some patients report teeth pain, sore throat, earache, or headache. +/- Fever or cough (related to drainage). Sinus infection signs on exam might reveal pain while palpating sinuses, drainage in posterior throat, abnormal nasal or eardrum findings.  There might be a fever noted as well.

Sinus infection diagnosis is typically made by a physician while doing a medical history and exam. Differential diagnosis might include Bacterial sinusitis, Viral sinusitis, Allergic rhinitis, or Other ENT conditions.

Finally, how to treat a sinus infection? Treatment depends on the duration of symptoms (how many days) and clinical presentation. If deemed a bacterial sinus infection by the physician, then antibiotics are often given. Other treatments for viral or bacterial sinus infections might include nasal sinus rinse, fluids, rest, nasal steroids, oral steroids.

What Doctor Online Oklahoma can do to help? We can take a detailed medical history and a visual exam during the video/virtual visit and determine the diagnosis.  We can formulate a treatment plan, which likely includes the recommendations above or may vary depending on each specific case.

This post is meant to be an informative and helpful resource but may not be all inclusive or the end all for medical treatment of this condition.  Please see our medical services page for more or feel free to ask us if further questions about sinus infections.  You can also schedule a video visit with our physician for further medical care and guidance.  You may also read more about Acute Sinusitis here if you are interested in learning more.

Pandemic Transition Period:

We are now in what I am calling a “Pandemic Transition Period” or a “Pandemic Culture Transition.”  Many are saying that we can now see the light at the end of the tunnel for re-opening our state, country, and economy.  Looks like many states, including Oklahoma, are about to open up for “Phase 1” of the re-opening process.  This is subject to change of course.  Therefore, we may see the light at the end of the tunnel, but we are still in the proverbial tunnel.

As we are exiting the tunnel and traversing the Pandemic Transition Period, there are certainly many opinions on when, how, why we should transition and if this timing and approach are the right choice.  Some think it is too soon to re-open the state, country, and economy and that we may see a viral resurgence.  Others think we should have re-opened already.  Definitely some passionate ideas and responses on both sides of the debate.  No matter where you find yourself on either side of this aisle, we are all cruising up the aisle and out the door nonetheless…sooner or later.  Also, no doubt that adequate hand washing, social distancing, and other preventative measures will continue and be encouraged throughout the transition.

Transitions can be rewarding, or they can be challenging, or they can be both.  However, you choose to look at it or make of it, might determine your experience or mindset in the Pandemic Transition Period.  I hope your health, family, finances, psyche, faith, and every other aspect of your lives improves and prospers in this time and the time to come.  I hope we head into a better season and have a great rest of the spring and a great summer as a state and nation.  No matter what season or situation you find yourself in now or in the future, we are here for you.  Doctor Online Oklahoma and Dr. Nevin White are here to serve your Online Urgent Care or Telemedicine needs.

What is Telemedicine and Telehealth in Oklahoma?

Telemedicine is a subset of telehealth used for the remote diagnosis and treatment of a patient by a physician.   Virtual or Video visits are conducted via internet-connected desktop, laptop, or smartphone in a secure online format.  Telemedicine visits are conducted in Oklahoma and throughout the world.

Telemedicine may be used to provide clinical health care services through the use of technology. Telemedicine involves the use of e-communications and e-software to provide clinical services without the need for a visit in a brick and mortal physical location.

Telemedicine technology is used by Doctor Online Oklahoma for Online Urgent Care, Online Doctor Visits, Virtual Doctor Visit Consults, and a wide array of other clinical services, such as medication management, that can be provided remotely via secure video and audio connections. We are also using Telemedicine for rural medicine visits to provide care to rural communities. We are also using Telemedicine to provide Coronavirus (COVID-19) consults during this pandemic to help with access to care and social distancing.

Telehealth is a broader term and actually encompasses Telemedicine.  Telehealth includes a broad range of services to provide patient care and improve the healthcare communications as a whole.  Telehealth is commonly used by mental health professionals to provide online visits and resources, such as Telepsychiatry or Tele-counseling visits.

Remember, Telemedicine refers specifically to clinical services through e-communications and e-software, whereas Telehealth can refer to clinical services and non-clinical services alike.  Examples of non-clinical services such as administration, training, and medical education.

Both Telemedicine and Telehealth are vital telecommunication platforms in the delivery of advanced and excellent medical care.  At Doctor Online Oklahoma we take pride in our use of Telemedicine to provide you with the best care anywhere in Oklahoma or in the world.  We are happy to take care of your Online Urgent Care needs and look forward to you scheduling with us today!  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us

COVID-19 News Updates:

What are the new Coronavirus or COVID-19 News Updates for Diagnostics? If you missed our initial Coronavirus Blog regarding symptoms, preventative measures, and “Coronavirus Consults”, then be sure to go back and check it out! There are now news reports and updates that detail a “Rapid Coronavirus (COVID-19) test” that will provide doctors and patients results within 5 minutes. This could be substantial in improving morbidity and mortality for patients in the inpatient and outpatient sectors. This could be substantial in improving resources and time to diagnosis for physicians and improve overall patient triage opportunities. Additionally, there are now 4 drive-thru COVID testing sites in Oklahoma, including 1 site in Tulsa and 1 site in OKC.

What are the new Coronavirus or COVID-19 News Updates for Treatments? Despite a varying level or degree of reporting, the anti-malarial drug Hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil) has shown promise in the potential to adequately treat COVID, if not at least mitigate its devastating effects. Of note, this medication is also used as a Disease Modifying Drug (DMARD) in the treatment of autoimmune conditions, such as Lupus. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an emergency-use authorization for Hydroxycholorquine and Chlorquine for Coronavirus (COVID-19).

Of course, the now “classic” treatments or preventative measures of Coronavirus (COVID-19) are still monumentally helpful and still should be at play, such as practicing good hand-washing, disinfecting surfaces, avoiding sick contacts, and practicing social distancing. The “peak” of Coronavirus is now projected to be mid to late April, but is subject to change. Which means it will potentially “plateau” or “level off” at that time and eventually start to come down. We still, however, need to practice classic treatments or prevention to ensure the virus continues to stave off and numbers continue to come down, even on the backside of this pandemic in Oklahoma and the US, well into May and June. Summer will likely be our friend, if we do our part.

Lastly, a vaccine for COVID is being researched and likely will be ready in approximately 1 year according to some reports. This current pandemic will not last that long, however in case the virus begins to come back in the fall or winter and have a “viral season” similar to our current “flu season”, then a vaccine would be crucial in preventing the devastating effects of COVID. Additionally, as more and more people are exposed to the virus, immunity will build, although the virus could certainly mutate in this season and future seasons, just as the flu virus does.

Here at Doctor Online Oklahoma, we are happy to continue to be a resource to you for Coronavirus (COVID-19) consults, sick visit consults, Telemedicine, Telehealth, Online Doctor Visits, Online Urgent Care Visits.
